If there’s one season to spend as much time outside as possible, this might be it.
The trails around Mount Helena and Mount Ascension are hard to beat this time of year. The temperatures are cooler, the summer heat is gone, and the changing colors make even your regular route feel a little different.
Walk it. Run it. Bike it. Bring the dog. Just get out there.
For something a little slower, take a walk around Spring Meadow Lake, wander through Helena’s historic neighborhoods, or head downtown and walk the Gulch. Fall is one of those times when even an ordinary walk feels pretty great.
And don’t put away the fishing gear just yet. Fall fishing can be some of the best of the year, especially once the summer crowds thin out.
The goal is simple: take advantage of the good weather while we have it.

Fall has a way of turning our attention back toward home.
Open the windows during those warm afternoons. Bring out the extra blankets. Make soup. Light a candle. Put mums by the front door if that’s your thing.
It’s also the perfect time to tackle a few of those less exciting homeowner tasks before winter arrives.
Clean the gutters. Disconnect hoses. Check exterior faucets. Schedule your furnace service. Clean the chimney if you have a wood-burning fireplace. Make sure the snow shovel didn’t mysteriously disappear sometime last March.
You don’t have to do it all in one weekend. But future-you will be very grateful when the first real cold snap arrives.

Once the maintenance items are out of the way, it’s time for the fun part. Bring out the cozy decor, put the summer wardrobes away and lean into everything that makes home feel good this time of year.
Add an extra blanket (or two) to the couch, swap lighter linens for warmer layers, and light your favorite candle. Pull the sweaters and boots back out, tuck away the shorts and sandals, and give your entryway a little reset for muddy shoes and cooler days ahead.
And don’t forget outside. A few mums or pumpkins by the front door, or a fall wreath can go a long way without feeling overdone.

Little choices add up.
Fall is a pretty great excuse to support local.
Grab a coffee downtown, pick up something sweet from a local bakery, meet a friend for a drink downtown, or settle in somewhere cozy for dinner.
And while you’re out, wander the shops, visit a pumpkin patch, tackle a corn maze, pick up some local cider, or find a festive fall event. Supporting local can be as simple as choosing to spend your fall traditions right here in our community.
Get coffee. Buy the loaf of bread. Pick out the pumpkin. Meet a friend for a drink. Wander downtown without much of an agenda.

The 6th Annual Septemberfest hits downtown Helena September 11th–13th with this year’s theme, Gulch Goes Galactic! Enjoy the Soapbox Derby, Sauter Balloons Sculpture Fest, and the United Way Family Fun Fest — all free, family-friendly, and benefiting United Way and its partner nonprofits.
The Werks Market
Gardenwerks invites the community to The Werks Market, a seasonal evening of fresh flavors, local vendors, and live music set against the garden backdrop at Shades of Green. Guests can browse local makers, grab a bite from the food trucks, and stay for the music!
Holter Block Party
The Holter Museum of Art’s second annual Rock the Block Art Fair returns to the Holter and along Cruse Street, building on last year’s success with an even bigger celebration of art and community. Explore booths from local artists and makers, dive into hands-on art activities, and soak up downtown Helena’s vibrant energy — a perfect fall day out for art lovers, supporters of local makers, and families alike.
Harvest Moon Banquet
Prickly Pear Land Trust’s Harvest Moon Banquet and Auction returns in October. It’s a celebration of the trails, open lands and outdoor spaces that make living here so special.
Nightmare Affair
ExplorationWorks’ 19th Annual Nightmare Affair Gala features dinner, science-themed cocktails, a costume contest, live and silent auctions, and live music by Ten Years Gone — all for science education across Montana. Guests who can’t attend in person can still join the online auction and be part of the fun.
Fall Artwalk
Bundle up and wander downtown Helena for the Fall Art Walk, where local businesses open their doors, artists take the spotlight, and the city transforms into a cozy, walkable gallery. It’s the season’s best excuse to sip something warm, discover local art, and soak up autumn in the heart of downtown.

Maybe it’s because we know it’s short.
There’s a little urgency to fall here that you don’t feel during the other seasons. It’s a season that makes you appreciate where you live. So take the hike. Go to the market. Drive somewhere pretty. Have dinner downtown. Sit outside for one more drink even if you need a jacket.
